Page Mill Labs Opens at 950 Page Mill Road

Stanford Research Park’s newest life science incubator—Page Mill Labs—opened this year at 950 Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, the same location where the preeminent pharmaceutical pioneer, Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni, founded Alza Corporation, which spun out over twenty life-saving pharmaceutical therapies.

Modern Wet Labs for Today’s Life Science Pioneers

Within Stanford Research Park, Page Mill Labs is a 77,300-square-foot lab building serving multiple companies at varying stages of growth. Page Mill Labs provides entrepreneurs with flexible, move-in-ready lab and office spaces and shared equipment. The facility offers suites that range from 1,800 square feet to 19,000 square feet, as well as a glass wash, autoclave, and a deionized water system.

Flexible Spaces for Life Science Incubation

Among current start-ups occupying Page Mill Labs are early-stage companies founded by Stanford faculty and affiliates, who benefit from locating their start-ups in close proximity to their academic labs on campus. As Stanford scientist-entrepreneurs translate discoveries into new technologies, treatments, and therapies, it has been critical for Stanford Research Park to offer flexible spaces convenient to Stanford University campus—a key objective fulfilled by Page Mill Labs in the Park’s life science ecosystem.

The start-ups located at 950 Page Mill are making significant advancements in the development of pharmaceuticals focused on novel biologic therapies for various diseases, particularly in oncology, as well as the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance healthcare solutions.

A Life Science Legacy Location

Dating back to the early days of Stanford Research Park, in the 1960s Stanford’s leadership recognized an extraordinary opportunity. With strategic partnerships and collaborations forged by University leadership, Stanford Research Park connected Stanford University’s pre-eminent researchers and graduates with scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors to help move vital discoveries from campus to market. A storied legacy of groundbreaking advancements in pharmaceutical and industrial biochemistry ushered in a wave of market successes, putting Stanford Research Park on the map as the West Coast’s first life science industry cluster.

Among many luminaries, Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni founded Alza Corporation in 1968 at 950 Page Mill. Alza was both a major pioneer in drug delivery systems, including launching more than 20 prescription pharmaceutical therapies to market, as well as a major employer, with 10,000 people employed here over its 20-year presence in Stanford Research Park. Alumni of Alza Corporation went on to found other life science companies, including Jazz Pharmaceuticals.

Stanford University’s commitment to life science R&D strengthened throughout the 20th century and continues to this day. The success of the Research Park is inextricably linked to the University. Entrepreneurs who locate their start-ups here secure access to Stanford University’s world-class research institutions, hospitals, and healthcare systems; scientific, medical and engineering talent; and highly educated labor pool.
