Name: Renate Kempf

Employer: Wavefront by VMware

Job Position: Senior Staff Technical Writer

Where did you grow up? Germany

Where do you ride from? Other side of Mountain View

How many years have you been commuting by bike? And how often? 30+ years / three to four times per week.

Why do you bike? Why not?

What other kinds of cycling do you do? Going places. Sometimes grocery shopping.

What you wish drivers knew? A distance of 3 feet (minimum) is required by law when passing a bicyclist on the road.

What do you wish other cyclists knew? Just because you’re on a bike doesn’t mean you can cross on a red light, run stop signs, etc.

What would you say to new cyclists or those interested? Wear bright colors. Have lights front and back. Ride defensively.

What would you say to those who think they can't bike given family obligations, physical strength, safety concerns, etc.? Biking can take you less time than driving depending on where you come from. Driving isn’t safe either.

What’s something you enjoy or care about? I feel passionate about the natural world and have a California native plant garden.
