Innovative & Sustainable Solutions

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford Research Park is on the front lines of the fight against climate change, working towards a more sustainable future for Palo Alto, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the world. Whether it’s SAP's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 or Rivian and Tesla leading the way with innovative designs and technologies that accelerate consumer demand for electric vehicles, our companies are using their resources for good when it comes to environmental stewardship.

The Stanford Research Park staff channels the same energy as our tenants into our community-oriented service and investments. We see endless possibilities for improving human and environmental progress in the world. Read on to learn how we work together to make positive impacts in our community.

Building Businesses for a Thriving Planet

Protecting Our Planet

Every day, it becomes more evident that the environmental crisis requires immediate action. Rivian is making a difference — not just by getting more electric vehicles on the road, but by focusing on economic and health outcomes that benefit everyone on the planet. Rivian’s story is about people coming together with one mission in mind: to protect our planet and the cultures that inhabit it for generations to come.

Net-Zero by 2030

SAP aspires to a world with zero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality. SAP's corporate sustainability approach is to create positive economic, social, and environmental impact within planetary boundaries – with a special focus on climate action, circular economy, and social responsibility. SAP is accelerating its goal of net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2030 – 20 years earlier than originally planned in line with achieving a 1.5°C future.

Pushing the Envelope of Sustainable Development

When the team at Hanover Page Mill Associates set out to plan a new office building at 1400 Page Mill Road they wanted to push the envelope of sustainability and lead the commercial real estate industry forward. The building they delivered is LEED Platinum, the highest LEED certification available. To achieve this elite status, the property had to reach the most rigorous bar of carbon, energy, water, waste, materials, health, and indoor environmental quality standards. Compared to the average building, 1400 Page Mill is 30% more energy efficient, 55% more landscape water efficient, 40% more indoor water efficient, and circulates 30% more fresh air.

Investing in Sustainability

Hudson Pacific Properties (HPP) operates multi-tenant office spaces throughout Stanford Research Park, including Palo Alto Square at 3000 El Camino Real. In 2020, HPP achieved net zero carbon in all operations five years ahead of schedule and set a new science-based goal to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030.

Sustainable Transportation

Stanford University and Stanford Research Park employers work together to offer valuable services to make commute trips better for the planet. Stanford has invested in 30 new bus shelters to serve transit riders, provides funding for VTA express bus service and Palo Alto Link rideshare, and partners with Mike's Bikes to offer on-site bicycle maintenance and repair for the hundreds of employees who bicycle to Stanford Research Park.

Supporting Sustainable Behaviors

Coupa Café at The Hub in Stanford Research Park prepares delicious and healthy meals in an all electric kitchen using organic ingredients from local family run farms. All single use service items are compostable. Even the "plastic" coffee lids, smoothie cups, straws, and utensils are made from plants not petroleum. Those who forget to bring their own reusable water bottle to Coupa Café may request a compostable cup or purchase water in a reusable and recyclable aluminum bottle.
